“Welcome to Hotel Born. Can I lead you the way to our treasure chest?” the front desk agent leaned down welcoming my four year old to her new home for the next three nights.
My daughter picked out a stuffed animal moose and the book, Goodnight Colorado. No need for a hotel pool here, the staff has already won her over.
If you are traveling with kids (or even if you’re not) the new Kimpton property, Hotel Born, in Denver offers a gorgeous and trendy stay, and more importantly, a friendly, attentive staff who already excel at customer service.
Convenience to Airport
My family and I recently stayed at Hotel Born over the Thanksgiving holiday. After a quick morning flight from Oakland and a 35 minute train ride directly from the airport to Union Station in downtown Denver, we arrived before lunchtime.
The airport train drops you off not even 50 feet from the hotel entrance. So lugging baby gear, strollers, and suitcases is a breeze getting from flight to destination. There is no need to rent a car and pay for overnight parking.
Aside from being extremely convenient for airport travelers, the location in Denver is ideal. The new construction Born is located in the LoDo neighborhood. I spoke with a few city locals, and this area used to be pretty run down. Fortunately, Union Station itself underwent an extensive gentrification, and development followed. The neighborhood is a mix of old and new. You can find rooftop gardens, giant outdoor chess boards, a mega Whole Foods Market, plenty of restaurants, and over 90 bars and pubs. There is a free Mall Ride which picks up right across from Hotel Born. This shuttle takes you through the bustling 16th Street shopping district, including the picture perfect historic block, Larimer Square. Hotel Born also offers complimentary bicycles guests can borrow to explore the extensive bike trails throughout Denver.
Comfort and Space of Brand New Rooms
We were upgraded to a King Spa Suite, and I have to admit, the extra space traveling with two young kids was such a treat. Entering the rustic but modern pine door, my first impression was stepping into a gorgeous city apartment that I wish I could call my own home. The designs are modern with touches of alpine and creative local art splashing color inside wooden frames, painted directly on the walls, and even found inside beautiful books lying perfectly, waiting for their crisp pages to be admired.
Our bedroom overlooked Union Station. Above the bed are two ceiling reading lights which can be turned off by swiping down on a modern light switch panel. In the living space, our four year old slept on the pull-out sofa bed, and our baby in the hotel crib. There was still plenty of space to move about.
The bathroom has a walk-in shower and separate soaking tub. I love when hotels use large re-fillable shampoo, conditioner, and body wash bottles. Hotel Born’s had fantastic scents of lemon verbena and fig.
Aside from robes and slippers, the open concept walk-in closet had a yoga mat to use either in the room or to take to the fitness center.
Since we checked in on Thanksgiving day, the front desk staff sent up two turkey cupcakes, a bottle of wine, and flowers to continue to welcome us to the hotel.
Our one year old bit the head off immediately. Gobble. Gobble.
Like all Kimpton properties, Hotel Born offers a complimentary wine and appetizer hour in the evening. In the morning, one side of the lobby has a coffee and tea station, complete with pumpkin spice and peppermint syrups.
The adjacent side offered what might be the best hot apple cider I’ve ever had, complete with cinnamon sticks and cranberries to bob up and down in your warm morning treat.
Here are the amenities listed on the Hotel Born website:

Also, there is a $20.00 facility fee that is applied to each night of your stay, per room. This fee allows for a complimentary Tesla vehicle with a 2 mile radius of the property, complimentary access to the Colorado Athletic Club (they offer yoga classes, as well as much more), complimentary access to the Museum of Contemporary Art, access to the onsite fitness center, an audio tour for original museum quality artwork in Kimpton Hotel Born public space, and printing & copying services (up to 50 pages).
The hotel design team used 32 local artists to add original color and conversation all around the property. In the porte cochere, after the Converse wearing bellmen open the door upon arrival, you are surrounded by fresh woods, houndstooth, and pops of color through local artists’ painting and photography. The lobby features mid-century modern furnishings combined with a rustic woods, and delicate pattern rugs. The lobby library is filled with hardcover books, many of which feature the art and textures inspired by the hotel. The corner of the library showcases a fireplace, and to be honest, with Kimpton’s morning coffees and ciders, as well as evening happy hour, I would be perfectly content to cozy up by the fire enjoying a Born beverage.
The hallways include small and large framed art, each piece unique. The guest rooms offer more framed art, as well as pieces painted right on the wall (the walk-in closet). The rooms also feature hard bound books to enjoy while overlooking the booming LoDo neighborhood below. You could easily spend the day touring the over 200 pieces of local art throughout the hotel.
Unfortunately, we weren’t able to eat dinner at this new wood-fire focused restaurant. Next time. We did have a fantastic breakfast the morning we checked out.
The open concept kitchen brings a social feel to the space. Guests can also view the meat-aging locker. This really made me want to come back for dinner!
I ordered the quinoa oatmeal with the most perfectly crunchable blueberries, and a side order of chicken apple sausage. Delicious. We also sampled some of the fresh squeezed juices blended with greens and fruits. My favorite is called “Across the Sea”, a glass of pineapple, orange, and fennel. My four year old devoured perfect donut holes, stuffed, dusted, and dipped.
BORN for Customer Service
Our stay at the Hotel Born in Denver was simply fantastic. The rooms were extremely comfortable and spacious, offered amazing water pressure, lovely bath amenities, eco-friendly lighting, the hallways quiet, the elevators were quick, the art and textures kept us looking for more, and the food…better than delicious. But the one element that stands out the most at this hotel is the friendly staff and customer service. My family felt well taken care of, and even spoiled with the staff’s friendliness and attention to detail. You know you found a superior hotel when it comes time to check out and you don’t really want to leave.
As we walked out the doors to Union Station, we heard, “One last surprise from the Treasure Chest for the train ride today?” The front desk agent walked toward our girls; their eyes lit up. Colorado coloring books and crayons filled their hands and smiles across their faces.
